The Use Of Baby Changing Bags

Author: search rankpros

For most people, the presence of a new human life normally brings with it the insanity of buying new things; unnecessary things that most parents will never use, including baby shoes for the legendary “walking-baby”, knee pads for babies that can’t quite walk, but do crawl “an extraordinary amount” and the infamous diaper genie repository; a repository into which one can put dirty nappies before removing them and putting them in the bin...which one was probably about to do anyway.
But never fear; these may be icebergs in the sea of useless and overpriced baby products, but there are also some genuinely useful lifeboat-products drifting around out there as well.

One such lifeboat is the baby changing bag – a bag specially designed with baby-needs in mind. Although you could technically use any old bag to carry around your baby-stuff, the advantages to proper baby changing bags are obvious to anybody who has tried dealing with babies before; the large and accessible pockets that keep dirty nappies separate from clean clothes; the instantly deployable changing mat for unexpected changings; the wipe-clean interior that makes cleaning up the inevitable mess as swift as possible; the insulated bottle pocket to keep food and drink cool or warm – need I go on?

As a mother of three, I only discovered nappy changing bags the second time round and, let me tell you, they make a huge difference to day-to-day life! Whilst they cannot work miracles, baby changing bags do make it much easier to organise yourself and your baby, offering a rare peace of mind that is hard to maintain whilst fumbling for the talc! Nowadays, as a midwife and parental advisor, I always advise new parents and veterans alike to invest in a good quality changing bag; they come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from small day bags for older babies to large hold-alls that can handle everything your baby could ever need, changing bags are available in a host of modern and classic designs so as not to compromise your style too much.

However, if you are thinking of buying yourself or somebody else one of these bags, it is worth paying some attention to the type of material that it is made from. Shockingly, a recent study from the Centre for Environmental Health in the USA found safety-standard defying levels of lead in 10% of vinyl changing pads from changing bags that they tested! As such, it may be worth steering your purchase towards woven or recycled changing bags, avoiding the vinyl altogether! The chances of anything too nasty coming from having a changing pad with over 600 lead parts per million are very slim but hey, in the case of babies there’s little point messing around when the safer option is probably just as efficient and the same price!

Creating The Perfect Baby Shower

Author: Caitlina Fuller

The first thing anyone should do when planning a baby shower is to have a theme for the baby shower favors. There should always be a theme to make the party look very elegant and not look like it was put together at the last second.

The best way on deciding a theme for a baby shower and the baby shower favors is to talk with the mom to be and find out how she is decorating the nursery. For example if the nursery is going to be angels and stars you can create baby shower favors like little angels or baby shower favors with stars on them.

Some of the best ideas for baby shower decorations are the do it yourself kind. There are universal decorations available that no matter what the theme is for the baby shower you can use these decorations as baby shower decorations.

You can even use a baby bathtub at the baby shower and fill it with any beverage of choice then put a few small baby toys to float around in it. You can use baby shower decorations on the ceiling and walls and hang baby booties and baby clothes on a clothesline as part of the baby shower decorations.

When planning the food for a baby shower try to make a general theme. Say the party theme is ladybugs then make ladybug cookies and cakes to add to the decorations. If the theme is, pacifiers then make small pacifiers from a jellybean and two wintergreen lifesavers. Glue the candies together with frosting and you have an edible baby shower favor.

Baby shower cakes are wonderful additions to a baby shower. Baby shower cakes come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors to compliment any shower. Try baby shower cakes in pastel colors if the mom to be will be having the baby in the spring. Try pastel red and green baby shower cakes if the shower is around Christmas. These cakes come in shapes such as diapers, pacifier's even cribs for larger cakes.

Open up your creativity to create the perfect party. Try experimenting with a few ideas of your own for the perfect theme. If you want to create the perfect baby shower talk with the mother to be to get an idea of her favorite things. Try to keep the budget as low as possible to create the perfect party without breaking the bank.

Baby Names and their Surnames

Author: Julie Welch

When choosing a baby name, it is best to make sure the name goes with the surname. And to get really technical, it is important that first, middle, and last names fit together well. Even if your child is not going to be using their middle name on a regular basis, there will be a time in which it will need to be revealed, so you have to make sure everything fits. If it does not, you will find that there may be some issues in the future.

So what are those issues?

Well, there is a reason why picking a baby name is such a hard process. You do not want to pick a name that other kids may make fun of someday. You also want a name that is strong and has a good meaning. But again, it must fit with the surname.

Flexible surname

A flexible surname is a last name that any first or middle name will go with. These surnames are also the most common that you will find. They are simple and to the point.

These surnames include:

Smith
Johnson
Williams
Jones
Brown
Davis
Miller
Wilson
Thomas

And the list goes on and on. There is quite a bit that you can do with these last names. However, it is sometimes good to refrain from names such as "Dave Davis","William Wilson", "Thomas Thomas". Yes, some of these names do happen. However, some people do not bat an eye at it, others do. If it is tradition, then naming a child "William Williams" may not be so bad if the child will go by the nickname "Bill" or "Will".

There is definitely a lot to think about here when it comes to names, but if you have one of these surnames or one of the other most common last names such as "Jackson", you are more likely to choose a first and middle name that will fit.

Making names fit

Okay, so you know that the entire name should fit together like an elegant sentence. The name should flow together well. When you say your baby's entire name together, you should not have to think, "Hmmm, does this fit?" Sometimes, parents try to make them fit when they do not. It may be because they want a particular name so bad, but sometimes it is necessary to compromise. For instance, "William Williams" may be how your child is referred to without a nickname like "Bill" or "Will".

Even if they have the name "William David Williams", or something to that effect, no one is going to be referring to them by their middle name all of the time. These are factors to take into consideration. Even if your child prefers to go by their middle name later, there is a time that real first name is going to come into play.

So use your best judgment. Make sure the child's entire name flows. You should know when you have got it right. You will be able to feel it when you have found a combination that works.

Tips to Breastfeed Adopted Newborns

Author: Jacob

Breast milk has some of the best antibodies and nutrients a person can give their child. You just can't replicate the benefits of breast milk, no matter the vitamins you put in baby formula. If you breast feed your child, you can reduce the risk of allergies and health conditions like eczema and asthma. And of course, breast milk is free: you don't have to spend a lot of money feeding your child if you can breast feed them. Breastfeeding your new baby is a choice and all mothers have to decide one way or the other. It is a way to be sure your new baby best the best start in life that he or she can get. As you know, there are many factors that may go into breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding and returning to work are widely accepted by most employers. They understand the value of doing both. Talk to your employer before you return so that you know what to expect there. You should be able to express your milk on your breaks and on your lunch break. If you know when those are scheduled you should get into the habit of expressing your milk at those times when you are still on maternity leave.

There are other ways to determine if your baby is consuming enough breast milk each day. Keep track of how many wet diapers they go through. You should have at least six. If the baby is with different people throughout the day have each person tally them so you get a total at the end of the day. Your baby can have any number of stools while breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor if chronic constipation seems to occur.

Breastfeeding causes a close bond to form between mom and baby. This is more than just the time spent close together; this is actally a hormonal change in mom while she is nursing. A hormone called 'prolactin' is released as a mother breast feeds and this has been known to cause a relaxing effect on the mom. This whole experience is what develops this bond between the baby and mom that lasts a lifetime.

Breast milk is sterile and contains perfectly balanced nutrients. Within a few days after your birth, a bluish and watery fluid is secreted from your breasts. This is called colostrum and is high on protein, vitamins, and minerals. For some mothers, the onset of colostrum varies - others have it before they even give birth and some take a few more days. Colostrum is the "human vaccine" against illnesses and can only be found in breast milk.

Help Baby Poo FAQ

Baby Constipation - Top 5 Questions and Answers

Here at babyconstipation.net we have hundreds of questions and answers from Mom’s like you who: to make your life little easier we have distilled all of those down to these top 5 Questions and Answers. If you have other questions please use our search to find what you are looking for.

Question 1: (for Breast Feeding Moms): My 2months old baby is in full breast milk. but didn’t poo for 2 days and still counting. But he feeds regularly and for now he is not in pain. Can he be constipated? or sometimes it is just normal for breast fed babies to absorb all the milk they had.? Anyone who had the same case or experienced? we are a bit worried. pls help tnx

Best Answer: Breastfed babies are almost NEVER constipated, it is virtually impossible. It is also completely normal for a breastfed baby not to poo for up to 7 days. The only ways to diagnose constipation in infants is to see the hard poop or have a doctor conduct an exam. And another word of caution, while most home remedies are safer than medications giving juice to such a young baby is not a good idea, nor is more than 2oz of water per day. But in particular I want to warn you about Karo (corn) syrup, there is more and more evidence that corn syrup can carry botulism. Which as you know can be fatal to infants.

Question 2: My baby will be 6 months old and having severe constipation for 1month: He was exclusively on breast milk until we started gerber foods at around 4 months: ( green pees , sqaush , carrots ) and fruits ( gerber prune , fresh peer ) . some people are suggesting me to feed banana , but i haven’t start it . I am concerened about this constipation . he has his poop for every 3-4 days and it is very hard . he struggles for 10-15 minutes to get it out. please suggest what food or anything can help my baby get over it Since last 1-2 weeks i have started giving karo syrup ( 1 tea spoon and 1-2 ounces of water ) . He is not interested in drinking boiled water . he doesn’t even take a sip of it. please advise.

Best Answers:
Here is a momma’s mini-enema remedy if this has been going on for a long time. However a sliver-of-soap suppository may be all it takes to make him do the doo - bear that in mind. Or give him prune juice that will make him go. Or finally you can dissolve a little bit of ivory soap in warm water. and suck it up in a snot sucker and give him an enima with it.

Question 3: (for Breast Feeding Moms): I have a young infant and am breastfeeding but my baby seems to be struggling with constipation and having uncomfortable bowel movements? Can anyone offer us some advice?

Best Answer: If you are breast feeding mom you need to try eating dried prunes and raisins that could help the baby poop easier since what you eat will be passed onto your baby. Also, try not consuming dairy products (cheese, milk, ice cream, etc) for awhile as this could be causing the problem. Finally what you could do is put some olive oil or petroleum jelly (olive oil works Better) on a q-tip and gently stick it into baby’s anus when you expect that the baby is trying to go, you can do this up to 5 times a day but don’t over use it or you could put a little boiled water that is now warm in a syringe and once again gently push it in to the anus, that will water down the poop and allow it to pass easier, but that can be done about 2 times a day.

Question 4: I just spoke to my pediatrician because my 6 month old son has not had a bowel movement in 6 days, and she recommended using some Karo syrup mixed with water to relieve his constipation, but she didn’t specify light or dark and the office is now closed for the day and I’d like to get started this evening! Which should I use — light or dark?

Best Answer: The pediatrician that cares for my children recomended that we do this for two of them when they were babies becaue the soy formula they were on made them constipated. She specified that we only use the Dark one and that is the only one that works for constipation. It worked quick and helped them to stay regular. They loved it too. It tasted good and had no side effects.

Question 5: Can Overdressing Your Baby Cause Constipation? My Sister’s house is always cold and she lives in a cold climate: she also feels like the baby should be bundled up even at night. I have heard that this is not good but can this be causing the baby’s constipation?

Best Answer: It sounds like she is overdressing him. She does have worry if she is making the baby uncomfortable and making him sweat a lot. As a healthcare professional I am worried that he is not getting enough fluids. Also, continuous constipation can cause him to become impacted. This is when the feces has become so hard it just sits in the bowels. Finally, it is possible to get dehydrated by sweating alot ( if not drinking enough ). My son got dehydrated once when he was sick and he was very constipated for a few days after the dehydration was treated.

Which Baby Stroller Is The Right For Your Baby

Author: jamel guzman

Any mom are going to tell you that the infant buggy is their bridge to the rest of the world. Without a infant buggy, most families would be left in their house, unable to bring the growing family outside and around. Some parents also find that a walk outside is the single method their lively infant will ever, ever fall asleep. No matter what your reason for using a infant buggy, whether business or fun, it is clear that strollers are a mainstay of modern life, an necessary help for both the busy person on the go and the relaxed person out for a break in the sun.

Strollers have come a long way in the recent times. You used to be faced with two basic models; either, you chose a pram, a big dark infant buggy where the infant could lie down, or with a small, flimsy infant buggy where you would tie your infant into a sitting position.

How to find the perfect infant buggy.

It is essential that you choose the best infant buggy for your infant; after all, your infant buggy is going to be one of the most necessary and frequently used infant accessories you have.

Strollers come in a wide range of specifications to meet the many needs and situations of parents. If you are primarily going to use your infant buggy while you are out buying stuff, or wish for a infant buggy you can take on trips that can be unfolded quickly, you should get a small infant buggy. These lightweight strollers are tiny and fold away quickly. Of course, the downside is that they are not as sturdy as standard strollers, and will not be as comfortable to push - sometimes, a very light infant buggy can be difficult to make go in the direction you want. If space it not at a premium, consider a a standard or full-size infant buggy. Not only does this make it easier to push around but also increases the comfort level of you and your infant As a compromise, consider getting a standard buggy and keeping a compact buggy in the vehicle for when you have to go out with your infant for chores.

If you are a healthy living enthusiast or love hiking, then you should definitely look into getting a jogging stroller, also known as a jogger. The main attraction of these strollers is that they come with big blow-up tires, which will give you a smooth ride over uneven surfaces. You will have a good grip on the handlebars thanks to their special design. Your infant may not be getting any exercise while you jog, but he or she will be sure to have fun.

You will spend a lot of time pushing your new buggy; be sure to take the time to make sure you have the best possible stroller for your infant and your lifestyle.

Preventing Diaper Rash

Author: Jack Reh

As the old saying goes, prevention is better than cure. For all that we may fear the onset of diaper rash in our children, there is no certainty of absolute and total prevention - but there is a lot that can be done to prevent diaper rash and make it far less likely, and it revolves mostly around keeping your baby dry and clean as far as is possible.

Your baby will not be shy about letting you know when it is in any discomfort. This can prevent diaper rash from developing, but would obviously not be a way of preventing it before it begins.

New parents have a lot of cause to be concerned about their baby's health. Visiting any page with even just the regular things that can - and do - happen to most babies is enough to drive someone to distraction. Even non-parents would be hard pressed not to shudder in sympathy.

Something as common as diaper rash, which affects most babies at some point in some measure, is still too much for any parent to bear with real composure. Knowing how to recognize diaper rash, and prevent it getting worse, is something that all parents will be well served by in the early life of their baby.

The diaper area of a baby will, unavoidably, come into contact with some bacteria on a regular basis. Even regular changes and cleaning can sometimes fail to pick it up. You will know when your baby has diaper rash, as it is characterized by skin in the diaper area appearing red and inflamed, and in some cases coming up in pimples. It will irritate the child and if left unchecked can develop into something worse, including a number of infections. As well as this, it will be obvious to any parent that the child is in quite some discomfort. They will cry more and louder, and show general displeasure. Keeping your baby clean will, however, keep diaper rash from occurring in a severe manner or too often, and swift corrective action including treatment with a gentle, pH neutral moisturizer will make a real difference, quickly.

The prevention of diaper rash is something that requires no small amount of diligence, as well as some luck. But there are some simple rules which can make the process a lot more straightforward.

Firstly, you must change your baby's diaper as soon as it is obviously soiled. This will prevent the infection from having somewhere to live. In the same spirit, it is important to clean your baby in the affected area after it has become soiled. Allowing the area to dry before putting on a fresh nappy is essential. A thin layer of ointment on the affected area will kill off germs while preventing others from taking hold. And applying the fresh diaper loosely will give room for the skin to breathe.

Finally when your baby moves on to solid foods you should take a few days between introducing new items. This will help you determine if the infection is down to a food allergy.

The Shettles Method Of Baby Gender Prediction

Author: Jerry Lindenburger

The late Dr. Landrum Shettles developed a baby gender selection method that he felt was "best supported by scientific evidence."

He wrote a million copy best selling book explaining his methods called How To Choose The Sex Of Your Baby which you will find a link to by visiting my website below. Dr Shettles claims a 75%-90% success rate using his simple, all natural, at home methods, and many thousands of couples have enjoyed an even higher (up to 98%) success rate using these very same methods to help them choose to have the baby boy or girl they wanted.

The Shettles method is based on the fact that it's the man's sperm that determines whether a baby is a female or male. This is because the woman's egg carries only the (x) or (girl) chromosome, and the man's sperm comes in two varieties, one carrying the (x) or girl sperm (which results in a girl baby) and the (y) or boy sperm (that results in a boy baby.) Dr Shettles also realized that the girl sperm was physically larger, stronger (longer lived), and a slower swimmer (slower to reach the egg.) The boy sperm is smaller, more fragile (dies off quicker), and is a much faster swimmer (will win the race to fertilize the egg most of the time.)

The doctor also realized that timing of intercourse, and the depth of penetration during conceptual intercourse could help to determine if the resulting baby was a boy or girl. To mother-to-be will have to track her day of ovulation precisely in order to time conceptual intercourse precisely as well.

If a boy baby is desired abstain from sex until the day before ovulation, and abstain again the second day after ovulation. Also when trying to conceive a boy sexual positions that allow deep penetration are best ("doggie style" or missionary position with the woman's legs extended up towards her head.) Why is this? Because of the differences in the two sperm. This timing, and deep penetration allows the fast swimming boy sperm to win the race to the fresh waiting egg, resulting in the boy baby you want.

If a girl baby is desired, the couple should have sex practicing only shallow penetration, and abstain from sex for a couple of days before ovulation and until a couple of days after ovulation. Here again this gives the short lived boy sperm to much time and distance to survive and allows the slow but longer lived girl sperm a time and distance advantage, and assures (hopefully) conceiving a girl baby.

Dr Shettles determined that vaginal acidity also plays a role in which sperm succeeds in fertilizing the egg. He found that a lower ph (higher acidity) favored the girl sperm and a higher ph (lower acidity) favored the survival of the boy sperm.

Although these are pretty simple concepts, you will find a guide to be indispensable! There are three ebooks offered online that will take you step by step through the entire process, and if followed diligently tip the odds of success from about 50/50 to well over 90%!

If you are serious about choosing the gender of your next baby to complete your family, take a minute to visit my website, spend the money it would cost you for a night out for a pizza, and give yourself the best chance to choose whether you conceive a baby girl or boy.

How to Get the Perfect Photo Birth Announcement

Author: C.L. Hendricks

More and more parents are choosing to send a photo birth announcement to announce the birth of their baby. This is a great opportunity to introduce your little one to family and friends who may not get to see the baby for a while. Of course, they want to see a picture. Does she have her mommy’s eyes? Does he have his daddy’s smile? That expression is just like Grandpa!

Memory books and keepsake boxes will fill with your photo birth announcement. Reveal the baby’s name, date of birth, time of birth, birth weight, birth length along with a precious picture of you little bundle of joy.

Taking a photo of an infant is not always an easy task. Use a digital camera set at the highest resolution. Take many, many photos. While she sleeps, yawns, stretches, anytime that you have a chance, snap a photo.

Ask family and friends to email you the photos that they have taken. Keep them in their original form. If you choose to crop a photo that you may use on your announcement, be sure to keep the original. You, or a graphic artist, will be better able to work with an original photo and make it fit properly on the announcement.

White or Black backgrounds are always classy

Choose soft colors to dress the infant in

Photograph the baby after naps, while content

Have dad hold the baby on shoulder (like burping) and take a photo from behind dad while the baby is lifting his head. Make sure dad’s shirt is a solid color and does not clash.

Sleeping babies are beautiful. Many parents become frustrated waiting for that perfect shot of the baby’s eyes. However, a sleeping baby is precious, serene and oh so sweet. Prepare ahead of time and dress the baby for his photo before he lies down for a nap. Prepare the napping place with accommodating backgrounds (a white blanket, black sheet, pastel colors). Make sure the background is clear of furniture, toys, and other items. Lay the baby down for his nap and wait. Peaceful, sleeping babies make adorable photo announcements.

Researching photo ideas prior to the birth of your baby will be very helpful. This way, after the baby is born, you will have an idea of how you want to take the photo. Narrow your announcement choices down to about three. Pick one that has a horizontal photo, one with a vertical photo, and maybe one with a square or circular photo. When you finally get that perfect picture, you will have card choices that will accommodate.

Along with your card choice, decide early on your opening line, and signature. The rest for the photo birth announcement will have to wait, until the arrival date!

How To’s of Custom Birth Announcements

Author: C.L. Hendricks

Custom birth announcements are a great way to announce the birth of your little bundle of joy. Send announcements as soon after the birth of your baby as possible, preferably within the first month, definitely by the sixth month.

Announce your sweet little girl with a soft pink card and a plush satin ribbon tied at the top. Pastel yellows and lavenders present beautiful and dainty baby girl birth announcements as well. You may choose a themed card such as an angel, princess, fairy, or a little ladybug. More unique and modern cards boast a combination of browns, pinks and greens.

The opening line on your announcement can be simple and sweet, or creative to match your theme.

We are proud to announce the birth of our daughter

Emily, Madison and Ben announce the birth of their baby sister

Molly and James proudly announce the birth of their little princess

Announce your handsome son on beautiful cards of blues and greens with accents of brown. This may be the only time in his adorable little life that cute little ribbons are accepted. Tie a matching blue ribbon around the announcement, and adhere it to a complimentary back card. This boasts elegance and style.

Themed boy baby birth announcements such as racecars, sports, fire trucks and airplanes are great to announce your bouncing baby boy. Be creative with your opening lines:

There’s a new player on our team! Announcing…

Ben has a new golfing buddy…

Look who has arrived right on time!
Arrival Date: (birth date) Landing Time: (birth time) Cargo: (weight & length)

Your baby’s name should stand out on the announcement. Use a different, but complimentary typestyle, with a larger font. Print the name in a vibrant color of ink. You may state the baby’s first and middle name only, with the last name being included in the parent’s signature, or you may choose to print the child’s full name.

Along with your baby’s name, include the birth date, time, weight, and length.

Your signature on the announcement can be as simple as the parent’s names. Many people like to include sibling names as well. You may wish to state expressions of love.

With love, Molly and James Clark

Proud parents Molly and James

Molly and James Clark
Big Sisters Emily & Madison and Big Brother Ben

Many companies will allow you to order your announcements early and send the birth statistics later. This is a great opportunity to receive the envelopes early and have them addressed and ready before the baby has arrived.

Be sure to take a complete announcement and its envelope to the post office and request proper postage. Envelopes of different shapes, sizes and/or weights may cost extra postage.

A Journey Through Infant Development: One Year!

Author: Michelle Vanderheide, BSW

It seems like only yesterday that I started this series on infant development, and now my baby boy has turned a year old. It’s fun to look back and reflect on how much has changed from one year ago. No year is like the first in the amount of growth and development a child makes, although the next several years are still critical and substantial in human development. Instead of writing about what I saw in his development over the past month, I’m going to reflect back and summarize my son’s development during the past year.

I have been so honored to have a neurotypically forming child to watch develop over the past twelve months. I have never understood or appreciated the complexities of development as I do now. So many critical and foundational milestones are met during this first year! If, while reading this year in review, you still have questions or wonder if you child is developing along a neurotypical pathway, we would love to sit down and talk with you about your concerns.

Linens are commonly used as fabric for households goods. Items such as towels, pillowcases, bed sheets and tablecloths were usually made of linen.

The usage of linen has gained popularity over the years. Today, the term "linen" is also applied to fabrics that are mixture of linen with cotton or various synthetic materials. The higher end of the mixed linens is referred as white goods. They are high quality linens and commonly used for making clothes. Baby-line of clothing and products are very good example.

The Baby Blanket---A Necessity or a Nuisance

Author: JoAnn Williams

In this day and age of polar fleece and cute little baby caps and clothing, does the infant child really need a blanket? Some blankets are big and bulky and make it hard to wrap a baby in them without losing him in all the folds. Others are too small. They also slip and slide and hardly ever stay in place. Blankets have even been known to smother an infant. One time a friend had taken care of my baby son for the day. We made plans to meet along the road on my way home. There was a howling blizzard and he was all wrapped up and covered with a heavy blanket when she handed him to me. When I got back into my car and unwrapped him, I discovered that his head was on the wrong end of the bundle which we had been carrying so carefully. Now that couldn’t have been good! Is all this wrapping up really necessary?

Since the beginning of time, baby blankets have been made out of every material known to man–from mosses and leaves to buckskins and furs. It’s a natural instinct in all of us animals to want to protect our babies and keep them warm. Have you ever noticed how a dog or a cat will curl up around their young, lick them, and keep them cozy? Even a mother hen will take her chicks under her wings and bring them next to her. I grew up hearing the story of my aunt’s birth in 1908. She was born at home on the farm and weighed only 1 ½ pounds. They put her into a cotton lined cigar box which sat on the oven door of the old wood cookstove. Aunt Anne lived to be 93 years old!

There are many types of baby blankets in use today. These include receiving blankets, crib blankets, and security blankets. The receiving or “swaddling” blanket is the first covering a newborn baby will have. This blanket is usually made of soft, lightweight, cotton flannel which is easy to wrap tightly around the baby. Swaddling gives the newborn the snug, secure feeling of the womb. Evidence suggests that swaddling may help reduce the symptoms of colic. Researchers believe that swaddling may also lessen the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), because it prevents babies from rolling onto their stomachs. With what we now know of SIDS, it is safer for young babies to sleep on their backs rather than on their tummies. Years ago we were told that sleeping on the tummy would give the baby a sense of security and make it easier for him to get rid of gases which can cause colic or upset stomach. It is important for babies to feel just as snug and secure on their backs as they would on their tummies. We can do this by placing the baby’s hands in a natural position over the chest and securely wrapping him in a cloth wrap. Swaddling helps keep the baby from fidgeting and jerking as they settle and sleep. Once the infant is asleep his startle reflex is less likely to awaken him between sleep cycles. This makes a longer, more settled sleep for the baby and therefore helps mom and dad sleep better, too.

Baby security blankets come in many sizes, colors, weights, and textures. The term “security blanket” gained in popularity when Charles M. Schulz put the character “Linus” in his Peanuts cartoon strip. As you probably know, Linus drags his trusty blanket around with him wherever he goes. Linus isn’t a baby, but a little boy who feels comfortable with his blankee. A newborn usually can’t tell one blanket from another as long as it’s soft. By the time the baby gets 6-12 months old, he has his routine and certain items he likes and others he dislikes. Parents are the ones who have given him this routine and the items to have and hold. The baby by this time is familiar with certain objects—many times a soft toy or a blanket (sometimes both). These items provide comfort at nap time or bedtime and make it much easier for the child to sleep contentedly. When travelling and sleeping in strange places, the familiar smell and feel of the security items help the baby rest comfortably. Some mothers have duplicate blankets so that there is a chance to wash the dirty one. This doesn’t always work and sometimes the security blanket can get real scuzzy. I’ve seen a 10 year old girl who keeps a little satin corner of her ragged security blanket hidden in her pocket at school, so that the other kids won’t think she’s a baby. But that little piece makes her feel confident and secure. Teenagers (especially girls) like to take their soft blankets to snuggle up in on the bus ride home after a tiring sporting event.

A crib blanket is usually larger. Some are fleecy and others are quilted. But either way, they are soft and cozy. Some babies like the fuzziness and others like the satiny feeling. A keepsake blanket can be any blanket, but many come with the child’s name and birth date embroidered on them. This makes the blanket especially personal for the youngster and also makes a very welcome and useful gift.

BabyBlanketBabe.com is a website which offers a wide variety of baby blankets. Most of them are available with personalization. They also have a line of smaller security blankets that are handy for travel. These feature an animal head, cozy softness and the satin edge that many young ones like to rub against their innocent little faces when they get sad or sleepy.
